Invest - Innovate - Transform: Empowering people and communities

Building on the key messages from the 2017 conference, the 26th European Social Services Conference (ESSC) will explore how we can improve services by empowering the people and communities which are at the heart of social welfare. Bringing together thousands of senior professionals from across Europe for the past 26 years, the European Social Services Conference (ESSC) has long been pioneering the value of knowledge sharing to transform people’s lives. Over the years, thousands of senior professionals have come together at the conference to share new ideas and improve services. For this annual event, the ESSC is organised in cooperation with The Regional Government of Andalusia.

Last year’s conference showcased a growing appetite to introduce new innovations and welfare technology in service planning and delivery. It showed how the empowerment of service users and innovative approaches such as co-production are transforming the way services are provided across Europe. It also demonstrated how public services across Europe are active in incorporating and developing new technology to respond to increasing needs.

Now that the European economy is recovering, there is an opportunity to stimulate resources for inclusive social development and growth, especially in key public services such as social, health, education and housing, which are still stall in regions and countries across Europe. This is why the 26th European Social Services Conference will address the need to invest in efficient and effective social policies to empower peoples and communities across Europe. Recognising the budget constraints brought by the crisis and the demographic challenges posed by population ageing, social policies need to be both adequate and fiscally sustainable.

In difficult economic times, the imperative to spend public money efficiently is even higher and not withstanding political choices and demands, the value of informed decision-making drawing on evidence in all its component parts is nowadays crucial. With 28 thematic workshops and 8 plenary sessions, the European Social Services Conference provides decision-makers and practitioners a platform for supporting innovation grounded on evidence-based knowledge sharing and development from across Europe.
