Chinmay Mehta is one of India’s recognised painter and muralist and is noted internationally for his
innovative contribution to preserving and celebrating the subcontinent’s rich cultural heritage. For
more than four decades, through his work in paintings and murals, cultural practices and academics,
design and architecture, he has brought contemporary relevance to indigenous forms and artisans,
thereby bridging the gap between design, arts, architecture and popular culture.
Born in 1942, in a town near Udaipur, he obtained his post-graduation in Visual Arts (Painting) in 1963.
He had his Doctors in Philosophy in Fine Arts on his research project: Treatment of Space in Miniature
Paintings of Rajasthan. He has been teaching Painting, Art History and Aesthetics at the graduation as
well as post-graduation levels. He has also been supervising research on various subjects and twenty
five scholars have so far been awarded Ph.D. with his supervision. He has also been associated with
the evaluation of Ph.D. and D.Litt. Dissertations of several Universities.
