What other learners are saying
★★★★★ "I've been using Memrise for about two years, studying European Portuguese. I have the paid version - it's a solid learning tool, and it has been my primary resource ever since got it. I find the Learn with Locals feature to be especially useful, more so as my Portuguese improves. My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Portugal a few months ago, and we were able to handle all of our transactions - stores, restaurants, markets, car rental, etc!" -Voloúre

I enjoy the recent changes made to this app; no more zero-to-light-speed training exercises. However, the placement of the continue button is causing some frustration. Overlapping with the spacebar could certainly create an inconvenience while typing in the written portion. Review section that can playback words and phrases to practice annunciation. Other than that, keep up the great work.

I really think this is one of the best language learning apps out there.... But it has one major flaw. I'm here to learn a language and speak it fluently, but the app is way too easy. To properly learn a language, all inputs need to be done on either typing or voice. There needs to be a setting in app that allows users to make answering more difficult (voice or typing inputs only rather than multiple choice). I had to take a star away because of this problem.

I have used memrise for almost 10 years. I loved how they set up their courses. They had amazing structure and I always felt that the phrases were a lot more practical and useful then other apps. I love how they combined learning, review, and the video from locals. I hate the new version. It's terrible. They completely changed the structure and format. The only thing that I like is how they have the experience levels. This is the perfect example of "if it's not broken then don't fix it".

Edit, 9/2024:: The new version just rolled out. I was skeptical leading up, fearing Memrise would try to be like Duolingo and their loathsome format. Delighted to report the new update seems AWESOME. The AI conversation scenarios will be helpful for travel, in particular. OLD REVIEW: I've tried learning Japanese before but it can be a chore. This makes it pretty fun and it's versatile. The only drawback is it's very formal speech that isn't used much in regular conversation

I've been an on-and-off user for years now, recently returning to revisit Japanese. The new Memrise is rather disappointing in how disorganized it is. I primarily learn best through what is its "scenerios" section, but it's discouragingly disorganized and unstructured especially when compared to a few years ago. The app desperately needs restructuring. They also took away the notes feature a while back.... Why?

New version takes away pretty much all the reasons I used this app. Edit: can't even get into the app anymore to see what the new content is, just redirects to a website that they are planning on deleting at the end of the year. I am REALLY regretting shelling out for the lifetime plan. Edit 2: in the new app now, the AI chat bot is SO BAD. Doing the Japanese course and it constantly uses way more advanced and extremely polite language than the course level no matter what.

I used to enjoy this app (especially with the idea that new words are seeds and you have to practice to 'water' them) but the new version is not fun to use at all. All the 'practice' is words I've never heard before - I understand challenging myself but this is ridiculous. Canceled my subscription, I think I'll be doing my language studying the old-school way moving forward. :(

What i use & find most useful is the silly videos, & then being able to practice those specific words in the video. Please please don't integrate with TikTok- stop that. I want the speaking review practice back. Membot is using stuff i don't know. It's not teaching aware enough for how people learn. Not fond of the direction memrise has been heading. Been using it a while. I still really appreciate the silly videos. The super literal translations are a big plus.
