Susan, our Head Coach and Director, has worked in the leisure industry for almost 16 years gaining vast experience and knowledge along the way. Her hands on experience in every aspect of operating a facility gives her a unique insight into the extensive requirements involved in opening and operating a safe and successful fitness business. Having tutored across Ireland since 2004, on various awards, including NCEF L2, ITEC, FETAC and other REPs accredited courses Susan realised there was a huge gap in the market. All of the schools she worked with prepared students to become outstanding fitness professionals but forgot to show them how to set up and operate a fitness business. Often there is a day or a half day seminar to cover all of these things in one go but realistically after spending over 100 hours gaining your fitness qualification doesn’t planning for it’s success take a little longer than 8 hours?

Susan believes the recession has brought about “the rise of the corner shop gym” with dozens of local fitness businesses being established across Ireland every month. However sadly we know that up to 50% of all start-ups fail in year one with the failure rate continuing to rise until year five is reached. From her experience this is often due to a lack of planning, strategy, forecasting, and business management because the operators are simply not aware of these vital components of self-employment. Corner Shop Gym is the only dedicated school in Ireland established to help fitness professionals with the business of fitness.
