বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতোত্তর কালে সামরিক পট পরিবর্তনের অস্থির সময়ে প্রতিবাদী লেখনী নিয়ে রুখে দাড়ানো কবিদের এক জন হেলাল হাফিজ । তার কাব্যের প্রধান উপকরণ যৌবন এবং বিদ্রোহ। যে জলে আগুন জ্বলে কাব্যগ্রন্থ প্রকাশিত হয় আশির দশকে।

কবি হেলাল হাফিজের জন্ম ১৯৪৮ সালের ৭ অক্টোবর, নেত্রকোনা জেলার বড়তলী গ্রামে। শৈশবে মাকে হারিয়েছেন। স্কুল শিক্ষক বাবার কড়া শাসনে কেটেছে শৈশবের দুরন্ত সময়। ছিলেন স্কুলের সেরা খেলোয়াড়। নেত্রকোনাতেই কেটেছে স্কুল এবং কলেজ জীবন। ১৯৬৭ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এসে ভর্তি হন বাংলা বিভাগে। তারপরই কবিতা নামক পোঁকার আক্রমণে আক্রান্ত হয়ে পড়েন। নেত্রকোনার আরেক কবি নির্মলেন্দু গুণ এবং কবি রফিক আজাদের সাথে জানাশোনা ছিল আগেই। নির্মলেন্দু গুণের সাথে পরিচয় বাবার কবিতা লেখার উছিলায়। স্কুল শিক্ষক বাবা খোরশেদ আলী তালুকদারও কবিতা লিখতেন। নির্মলন্দু গুণ এবং রফিক আজাদের সাথে বাবা কবিতা লিখতেন খালেকদাদ চৌধুরী সম্পাদিত ‘উত্তর আকাশ’ নামের পত্রিকায়। সেই সুবাদে ঢাকায় এসে নির্মলেন্দু গুণ এবং রফিক আজাদের সাথে সম্পর্কটা আরো পাকাপোক্ত হয়। তারপর থেকেই কবিতায় যাপিত জীবন শুরু।

Helal Hafiz (Bengali: হেলাল হাফিজ, born 7 October 1948) is a Bangladeshi poet. He is considered a true representative of poets of his generation having certain creative traits in an age when his nation and countries in the neighbourhood witnessed dramatic transitions particularly in the arena of politics. On completion of his schooling and college studies at his hometown in northern Netrokona, Hafiz got himself enrolled at the University of Dhaka, at a time when it appeared as main centre of the brewing nationalist movement which eventually saw the 1971 emergence of independent Bangladesh. He is considered a true representative of the poets of his generation. He studied at Netrokona Datta High School, Netrokona College and University of Dhaka. Hafiz earned the repute of being an established poet of verve, vigour and emptiness long ahead of the publication of his first collection of poems: Je Jale Agun Jwale (The water where fire is ignited) in 1986. It earned the best sellers status in Ekushey Book Fair of the year, discarding novels by popular writers who traditionally occupy the position in Bangladesh’s biggest annual book fair. "Nishiddha Sampadakiya" (The Banned Editorial), one of his most quoted poems inspired at least two generations since the pre-independence nationalist upsurge of 1969 and pro-democracy campaigns in post independence periods.
