محمد بن علی بن موسی مشهور به امام جواد و امام محمدِ تقی (۱۹۵-۲۲۰ق) امام نهم شیعیان اثناعشری است. کنیه او ابوجعفر ثانی است. او ۱۷ سال امامت کرد و در ۲۵ سالگی به شهادت رسید. در میان امامان شیعه، وی جوان‌ترین امام در هنگام شهادت بوده است.

سنّ کمِ او در هنگام شهادت پدر، سبب شد تا شماری از اصحاب امام رضا(ع)، در امامت او تردید کنند؛ برخی، عبدالله بن موسی را امام خواندند و برخی دیگر به واقفیه پیوستند، اما بیشتر آنان امامت محمد بن علی(ع) را پذیرفتند.
