Normally the best place to begin is just before something unusual happens. The main character has a journey to go on, so we

need to understand a little of where they're from before they set off.

In some ways, your beginning is an ending; the ending of your characters old life and transition into a new one, just as

the end of your story is the end of their new life and a transition forward into another.

When thinking about your story, identify an incident that will have the most impact on your main character and leave them

no choice but to act. How they then react to this will draw the audience into the story. Do they rise to the occasion, or

fight it?

Most people's reaction to any bad or negative situation is to hide from it, deny its existence until they have no choice.

Luke, desperate as he was to join the Rebels and fight the Empire, chooses to remain on the farm. The whole thing is much

bigger than him and his natural reaction is fear and respect for his family.

This negative reaction helps the audience identify with the character. The protagonist shouldn't just jump up and shout, 'I

know, I'll take down the enemy single handed!' That's not a natural reaction and your audience will feel alienated if

presented with such. Instead people tend to mull things over, avoid the situation and try any which way they can to wriggle

out of it.

The inciting incident, followed by wrangling and debate is pretty much your first act. Eventually something will happen

that will force your main character to take decisive action. In this way you can take your protagonist forward into the

second act where the real action is, safe in the knowledge that the audience are right behind them.
