The Dhammachai International Research Institute (DIRI) ของนิวซีแลนด์และออสเตรเลียดำเนินกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ในด้านการศึกษาและการวิจัยด้านพุทธศาสนศึกษา วัตถุประสงค์มีดังนี้

1) เพื่อการวิจัยและศึกษาคำสอนดั้งเดิมของพระพุทธเจ้าโดยไม่มีอคติใด ๆ กับโรงเรียนหรือสาขาวิชาใด ๆ เช่นเถรวาทมหาเถรหยานหรือวชิรญา

2) เพื่อส่งเสริมทั้งการศึกษาเชิงวิชาการของพระพุทธศาสนาโดยเฉพาะต้นกำเนิดของพุทธศาสนาและการประยุกต์ใช้คำสอนในชีวิตประจำวัน

3) การจัดตั้งวารสารของตนเองโดยสถาบันซึ่งจะตีพิมพ์บทความที่เกี่ยวข้องกับวัตถุประสงค์เหล่านี้

4) ร่วมมือกับศูนย์ที่คล้ายกันในสถาบันการศึกษาอื่น ๆ ในการจัดสัมมนาและการประชุมเป็นต้น

งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับ “คำสอนดั้งเดิมของพระพุทธเจ้า” ได้ดำเนินการโดยสถาบันมาหลายปีแล้ว ดังนั้นสถาบันจึงจัดสัมมนานานาชาติเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธศาสนายุคต้นด้วยความร่วมมือของนักวิชาการชาวพุทธจากทั่วโลกที่มีสาขาการวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษาพุทธศาสนาในช่วงต้น
