التفسير في اللغة هو: البيان والكشف للمعاني المقبولة والمقصودة، أمّا في الاصطلاح الشرعيّ؛ فهو: علمٌ يبحث في بيان كيفيّة فَهْم ألفاظ القرآن الكريم، وكشف ما فيه من دلالاتٍ، وأحكامٍ، وتراكيب، ومعانٍ.
ويُعرّف أيضاً بأنّه: كشف وبيان المعنى المُراد من اللفظ القرآنيّ، وقد عرّف الزركشيّ التفسير بأنّه: "علمٌ يُفهم به كتاب الله -تعالى-، المُنزل على نبيّه محمّدٍ -صلّى الله عليه وسلّم-، وبيان معانيه، واستخراج أحكامه وحُكمه".
